Why I Hated the 'Miss Peregrine' Trilogy

Famous for being adapted into a successful film, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (or as I will be referring to it, Miss Peregrine ), is the first book in a trilogy, followed by Hollow City and Library of Souls . The story follows a young boy named Jake, who is made aware of a mystery surrounding his recently dead grandfather, killed by a monster. He travels to Wales, where he discovers a house full of children with supernatural powers run by Miss Peregrine, a woman who can turn into a bird. The first book follows his entry into this magical world, known as “Peculiardom”, and how the children must fight against terrifying creatures called Hollowgasts, and even more terrifying, powerful human versions of these creatures, known as ‘Wights’. In Defence of Lucy Steele from 'Sense and Sensibility'

This is going to be a pretty niche blog post, since it's exploring a minor character from Sense and Sensibility , but I've been itching to write it for months because it's something I feel very strongly about. If you read my post A Day in the Life of a Y12 Student in Lockdown , you'll probably know that one of the books I'm studying right now is Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen - not my favourite of her novels but still a good read. Being in an English class, there's obviously a lot of discussion about it. I've already expressed my opinion in class, but still wanted to expand on it. Lucy Steele is engaged to Edward Ferrars, the man that our main character Elinor is in love with. For most of the first volume, Elinor and her family are convinced that Edward loves her back, until Lucy reveals to her that she has been engaged to him for four years. My Top 5 Classics!

In the past year and a half, I've read 44 books that are listed as 'classics' - I don't really know whether some modern books count, so I've classed this as books written pre-1950, mainly Victorian, but I don't have an exact definition for classics. I know a lot of people hate them, and a lot of people think they're the greatest - I'm somewhere in the middle. Because I've only really started reading for fun again recently, I had a lot of appreciation for enjoyable classics, because they were the only thing I would let myself read (gotta get into Uni and all that). There were some I've really had to drag myself through, but also some that are a lot of fun.
