Who Am I?

Inspired by an extract from a short story about war. After reading it I tried to put myself in the shoes of one of the soldiers, and listed the random thoughts that came out. This is what I made.

One, two, three, four,
Up, down,
Like cattle,
Like ants,
A mountain and a molehill,
Who am I?

One, two, three, four,
A stretching plain,
Don't touch the smoke,
Down! Down!
Who am I?

One, two, three, four,
My shoulders are heavy, sir,
Can we stop, sir,
I've forgotten who I am, sir,
Who am I?

My love in the mist,
The mist which tastes like
Tear-stained letters,
Smudged ink,
She told me to remember,
Who am I?

The sound of the shells.
Who am I?
Gunshots, gaping bone.
Who am I?
Gurgling thick scarlet,
He drops dead,
Dead.
Dead.

Who am I?
